Laser eye surgery is a type of refractive treatment designed to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses by correcting how the eye focuses light. The procedure uses advanced laser technology to carefully reshape the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, so that light can be focused more accurately onto the retina.

Laser eye surgery is used to treat refractive errors, which affect how light is focused inside the eye. The most common conditions treated are short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and, for some patients, aspects of age-related near-vision changes (presbyopia).
Short-sightedness (myopia)
Myopia causes distant objects to appear blurred, while near vision is often clearer. It occurs when the eye is slightly longer than average, or the cornea is more curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina.
Laser eye surgery can correct many cases of short-sightedness by reshaping the cornea to improve distance vision. Treatment suitability depends on factors such as prescription strength, corneal thickness and overall eye health.
Long-sightedness (hyperopia)
Hyperopia can make near tasks such as reading, screen use or detailed work more challenging. It is typically related to the eye being shorter than average or the cornea having a flatter shape, causing light to focus behind the retina.
Laser eye surgery may be used to correct selected levels of long-sightedness and reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses in suitable patients. Treatment recommendations are based on your prescription, eye structure and clinical assessment.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism occurs when the cornea has a more irregular shape, causing light to focus unevenly within the eye. This can result in blurred, distorted or fluctuating vision at different distances.
Astigmatism commonly occurs alongside short-sightedness or long-sightedness and can often be addressed during laser eye surgery. Treatment planning is tailored to the degree of astigmatism and the characteristics of your cornea.
Presbyopia
Presbyopia is the age-related decline in near vision that typically becomes noticeable from the mid 40s onwards. As the eye’s natural lens becomes less flexible over time, focusing on close objects becomes more difficult.
Some patients with presbyopia may be suitable for laser-based approaches designed to reduce dependence on reading glasses. However, suitability varies considerably. Depending on your prescription, age, eye health and visual priorities, alternative procedures such as implantable contact lenses (ICL) or refractive lens exchange (RLE) may sometimes offer a more appropriate treatment approach.

The everyday gold standard.
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is one of the most commonly performed forms of laser eye surgery. The procedure involves creating a thin layer within the cornea, reshaping the underlying tissue using a laser and then carefully repositioning the surface layer. LASIK is often chosen for its relatively fast visual recovery, with many patients noticing improved vision within the first one to two days.

Flapless, surface-based.
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) and LASEK are surface-based laser treatments that reshape the cornea without creating a flap. At our clinic, we offer TransPRK, an advanced no-touch technique that removes the corneal surface and reshapes the cornea in a single laser treatment. Surface-based procedures may be suitable for patients with thinner corneas, active lifestyles or those not suited to LASIK, with initial healing typically taking around five days.

Minimal incision, minimal disruption.
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a minimally invasive, flapless laser procedure. Using a femtosecond laser, a small disc-shaped piece of tissue is created within the cornea and removed through a very small incision. By reshaping the cornea without lifting a flap, SMILE preserves more corneal nerves and is associated with reduced postoperative dry eye symptoms. SMILE is a popular option for athletes and those with dry or sensitive eyes.

Blended Vision is a specialised laser treatment for presbyopia, the age-related loss of near vision. Laser eye surgery is typically performed as a day procedure, with most patients returning home shortly after treatment. Your treatment plan and eye measurements will be confirmed before surgery, and anaesthetic eye drops may be used for comfort.
The laser treatment is usually brief, with both eyes commonly treated on the same day. After surgery, structured follow-up care includes post-operative reviews, medication guidance, recovery advice and ongoing support from our clinical team

That depends on your prescription, corneal thickness, age, lifestyle and the structure of your eye. After a full diagnostic assessment, autorefraction, corneal topography, OCT and aberrometry, Mr Ghabra will walk you through every option that fits, and the trade-offs of each. We’ll never recommend a procedure simply because it’s the one we do.
Most healthy adults over 21 with a stable prescription are candidates for one of the techniques we offer. We treat short-sight, long-sight, astigmatism and (with Blended Vision or refractive lens exchange) presbyopia. Conditions that may rule LASIK out — thin corneas, keratoconus, severe dry eye — often still have an alternative. The assessment exists to find it.
Laser vision correction starts from £1,100 per eye for LASIK and Trans-PRK. SMILE and Blended Vision are quoted on assessment. ICL is from £3,500 per eye. The quoted fee includes the procedure, your post-operative reviews over the following three months, and (where clinically appropriate) free retreatment within twelve months. The assessment itself is complimentary.
The procedure itself is painless — anaesthetic drops numb the surface of the eye, and the laser itself takes seconds per eye. For the first few hours afterwards, most patients describe gritty or watery eyes that subside overnight. Trans-PRK has a slightly longer recovery window than LASIK; we’ll talk you through what to expect, day by day, before you commit.
With LASIK and SMILE, most patients see well enough to read and use a phone the next morning, and to drive within 24–48 hours. Trans-PRK is a gentler surface technique with a longer healing window — vision typically settles over five to seven days, with refinement over the following weeks. Final vision is reviewed at three months.
If you’re under 45 with stable distance vision, full distance correction is usually the goal. From the mid-forties, the natural lens stiffens and reading glasses become part of the picture for everyone. We offer Blended Vision — a laser technique that biases one eye for distance and the other for near — and lens-based options that can correct both. We’ll cover the realistic trade-offs at your consultation.
