Built on a quiet conviction.

The Harley Street Eye Centre at 22a was founded in 2018 by Mr Marwan Ghabra around a quiet conviction – that real ophthalmic care begins in conversation with the surgeon who will perform the procedure, not a call centre.

Forty years of clinical practice live behind that idea, including the first phacoemulsification cataract surgery in Damascus in 1998 and the technique that now carries his name. From routine refractive surgery to the corneal and retinal cases other clinics turn away, every patient is met in person, scanned with our full diagnostic suite, and given a plan built around their eyes – not a template.

Right treatment, right time.

We provide individualised treatment plans tailored to each patient’s condition, lifestyle and visual goals – delivered with ethical, evidence-based practice.

01

Consultant-led

Every assessment, every decision, every procedure is led by a senior consultant. No juniors fronting clinical calls.

02

Ethical & evidence-based

Diagnostics first. We only recommend a procedure when the data and your goals genuinely align.

03

Continuity of care

The same names answer your calls, scan your eyes and follow up after surgery - for as long as you need us.

The clinic other clinics call.

We’re increasingly recognised internationally as a go-to clinic for complicated, unusual or second-opinion cases. Patients fly in from across the UK, the Gulf and the United States – particularly for keratoconus, advanced corneal disease and retinitis pigmentosa.

In 2013, Mr Marwan and Dr Hakam Ghabra co-founded MAG Optics to develop custom intra-corneal implants for keratoconus – earning selection into the Johnson & Johnson J Labs Accelerator.

The work led to the Ghabra Technique – a femtosecond laser-assisted method for implanting collagen lenticules deep within the corneal stroma, designed to preserve native tissue where transplant would otherwise be the only option.

The family’s clinical research arm, United Scientific Associates, runs proof-of-concept studies that bring innovations from bench to patient.

Lens innovation: the mix-and-match approach.

4fb19f2b60d8ba33351a1e9e4ac093620e790497

Our research in refractive and cataract surgery pioneered theย โ€œmix-and-matchโ€ intra-ocular lens (IOL) strategy, combining monofocal, extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) and multifocal lens technologies.

By customising IOL combinations to each eye, this method achieves:

  • Spectacle independence for all visual ranges
  • Reduced glare and halo phenomena
  • Improved contrast sensitivity and night vision

This evidence-based approach has influenced modern refractive practice worldwide and remains central to advanced lens-surgery planning.
