I recently took my mum to the Harley Street Eye Centre, and I honestly cannot praise them enough. She was quite hesitant about going when it comes to your eyes, you donโt take any chances, and you need to be in the hands of people you can truly trust. From the moment we walked in, any nerves she had just melted away. The staff were incredibly professional, warm, and reassuring throughout the entire experience. They made my mum feel completely at ease, which for someone who was apprehensive about an eye appointment, meant the world to us. Nothing felt rushed, and you could tell they genuinely cared about their patients. They examined her thoroughly, gave a clear diagnosis, and sorted the issue without any fuss. The whole process was smooth, straightforward, and stress-free from start to finish. If you or a loved one are looking for an eye clinic where youโll be treated with the utmost care and expertise, look no further than the Harley Street Eye Centre. Absolutely first class. Weโll be coming back without hesitation.Posted on Google![]()

I had a great experience with this clinic from start to finish. The whole team were friendly, helpful, supportive, and incredibly professional throughout the process. They gave me all the information I needed and seemed to be very thorough during the assessment, which made me feel confident and well informed before going ahead with treatment. During the laser eye surgery itself, I felt completely reassured and in highly professional hands. The staff were calm, supportive, and talked me through everything, which really helped put me at ease. Iโm over 40 and had an over/under correction approach to hopefully reduce the need for reading glasses in the future, and the team explained everything clearly so I felt comfortable with the decision. Just a few days after my LASIK treatment, I already have better than 20/20 vision and itโs crazy to see everything in what feels like HD. I also have thin corneas, so I wasnโt sure if Iโd even be suitable for surgery, which makes the outcome even more amazing for me. Iโm pleased I decided to go ahead with the procedure and would highly recommend this clinic to anyone considering laser eye surgery.Posted on Google![]()

I underwent LASIK surgery at Harley Street Eye Centre in March and would like to share my very positive experience. The entire process was handled with a high level of professionalism and care. Dr Ghabara, who performed my surgery, demonstrated exceptional expertise, and the procedure itself was smooth and remarkably efficient. The overall experience was excellent. I would also like to acknowledge Dr Hakam, who served as client coordinator and ensured that every stage of the process was clearly explained and well organised. In addition, April and Amanda at reception provided consistently courteous and attentive service, contributing to a welcoming and well-managed environment. I am particularly pleased to report that my recovery has been entirely uneventful, with no issues following the LASIK procedure, and I am extremely satisfied with the outcome. I would confidently recommend Harley Street Eye Clinic to anyone considering laser eye surgery.Posted on Google![]()

Hyperopia, or long-sightedness, describes an eye that has to work harder than it should to bring anything into focus, and near objects most of all. Reading feels effortful, screens tire the eyes, and the strain often shows up as headaches rather than obvious blur.
Because young eyes can compensate by focusing harder, hyperopia is frequently missed for years and only becomes apparent as that focusing reserve declines with age. What feels like a sudden change is usually a long-standing prescription finally becoming visible.
In a hyperopic eye, light is brought to a focus behind the retina rather than on it, either because the eye is fractionally too short from front to back or because the cornea is too flatly curved. The focusing muscle inside the eye can pull the image forward onto the retina, which is why many long-sighted people see clearly for years while doing constant unconscious work to achieve it.
That reserve diminishes steadily from around the age of 40. Near vision blurs first, then intermediate, and eventually distance vision too. Hyperopia is also relevant to eye health: a shorter eye has a more crowded interior and a narrower drainage angle, which raises the risk of angle-closure glaucoma in later life.
Symptoms are often described as fatigue rather than blur, particularly in younger patients. They may include:
In children, hyperopia is a common cause of accommodative squint and amblyopia. Both are highly treatable when identified early, which is why any suspected turn in a child’s eye warrants a proper cycloplegic assessment rather than reassurance.
Hyperopia is largely determined by the anatomy of the eye, with several recognised influences:
Rarely, secondary causes including retinal swelling or an intraocular tumour, which is why a new hyperopic shift is examined properly
Because focusing effort can mask the true prescription, hyperopia assessment needs more than a standard sight test. Assessment may include:
Full refraction including, in children and young adults, cycloplegic refraction to relax focusing and reveal the full prescription
Visual acuity at distance, intermediate and near
Optical biometry to measure axial length and anterior chamber depth
Corneal topography and tomography with the Oculus AXL Pentacam
Assessment of the drainage angle and intraocular pressure, given the association with angle closure
Assessment of eye alignment and binocular function, particularly in children
Anterior chamber depth is a key measurement if you are considering an ICL, as a shallow chamber can rule that option out and point instead towards lens-based surgery.
Glasses and contact lenses correct hyperopia effectively. Surgical options are chosen according to the strength of the prescription, your age and the internal dimensions of the eye.
Reshapes the central cornea to steepen it slightly, bringing the focal point forward onto the retina. Well established for low to moderate hyperopia, with rapid visual recovery.
A surface-based, no-touch laser alternative for patients whose corneal thickness or profession makes a flap less desirable. Recovery is slower but the corneal structure is left more intact.
ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)
An intraocular lens placed in front of the natural lens, suitable for higher hyperopic prescriptions where laser correction would be less predictable. Requires adequate anterior chamber depth.
Replacement of the natural lens with an intraocular lens. Often the most stable option for hyperopic patients over 45, since it corrects distance and near vision together and removes the possibility of future cataract.
A laser approach that sets the two eyes to slightly different focal points, extending the range of clear vision. Suitable for patients who want to reduce dependence on reading glasses.
For children, treatment usually means accurate spectacle correction, with patching or atropine where amblyopia is present, and squint surgery only where a turn persists despite full correction.
Glasses or contact lenses
Glasses and contact lenses correct hyperopia effectively. Discuss with Harley Street Eye Centre the best options for your eyes.
Long-sighted eyes are anatomically more crowded, which puts a small number of people at risk of acute angle-closure glaucoma. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop severe eye pain with redness, blurred vision, rainbow-coloured halos around lights, a fixed mid-dilated pupil, headache, nausea or vomiting.
This is a genuine emergency in which pressure inside the eye rises rapidly. Treated within hours, sight is usually preserved.

Our consultants are sub-specialists, not generalists. Founder and Medical Director Mr Marwan Ghabra brings more than 30 years of clinical and surgical experience, and every patient is seen and assessed by the consultant who would go on to treat them. You will not be passed between staff for the parts of your care that matter.
Diagnosis is only as good as the imaging behind it. Our diagnostic suite includes corneal topography and tomography, the Oculus AXL Pentacam, OCT and optical biometry, so that findings are measured and tracked over time rather than estimated. Where a condition is progressive, this is what allows change to be identified early.
We are regulated by the Care Quality Commission and our approach is built on honest clinical advice. If a condition needs monitoring rather than treatment, we will say so. If a treatment is unlikely to give you the result you are hoping for, we will say that too, and explain what the realistic alternatives are.
Mr Marwan Ghabra is the Founder and Medical Director of The Harley Street Eye Centre, where he leads a multidisciplinary team delivering advanced, consultant-led eye care across a wide range of ophthalmic subspecialties, particularly in corneal disease and keratoconus.
He is the developer of the โGhabra Techniqueโ, an innovative approach to keratoconus management designed to address both anterior and posterior corneal irregularities. Alongside his private practice, he continues to manage complex surgical cases within the NHS, contributes to ophthalmic innovation and clinical research, and remains actively involved in education as a lecturer, mentor and international speaker.

Hyperopia is an anatomical mismatch that has usually been present since birth: the eye is too short or the cornea too flat. Presbyopia is an age-related stiffening of the natural lens that affects everybody from the mid-forties. They feel similar because both blur near vision, and they frequently coexist, which is why a long-sighted patient often notices reading difficulty earlier than a short-sighted one.
A standard distance acuity test can be passed comfortably by a young hyperopic eye that is focusing hard to achieve it. The prescription is real, but the effort behind it is invisible on the chart. Cycloplegic refraction, which temporarily relaxes the focusing muscle, reveals the full picture.
Yes, for low to moderate prescriptions. Hyperopic laser treatment steepens the cornea rather than flattening it, and the predictable range is narrower than for short-sightedness. Higher prescriptions are usually better served by an ICL or lens replacement.
Often, yes. Most children are mildly long-sighted at birth and the prescription reduces as the eye grows. What matters is whether the hyperopia is causing a squint or amblyopia in the meantime, because those need treating during the years when vision is still developing.
It increases the risk of one specific type, angle-closure glaucoma, because a shorter eye has a narrower drainage angle. It does not increase the risk of the more common open-angle glaucoma. A narrow angle found on examination can often be treated preventively with a simple laser procedure.
No. Poor light makes focusing more effortful and so makes symptoms more noticeable, but it does not change the prescription or damage the eye. The discomfort is real; the harm is not.
A consultation with Mr Ghabra includes a full diagnostic workup and an unhurried conversation with the consultant who would treat you. Most assessments are seen within the week, and same-day appointments are often available.
