I recently took my mum to the Harley Street Eye Centre, and I honestly cannot praise them enough. She was quite hesitant about going when it comes to your eyes, you donโ€™t take any chances, and you need to be in the hands of people you can truly trust. From the moment we walked in, any nerves she had just melted away. The staff were incredibly professional, warm, and reassuring throughout the entire experience. They made my mum feel completely at ease, which for someone who was apprehensive about an eye appointment, meant the world to us. Nothing felt rushed, and you could tell they genuinely cared about their patients. They examined her thoroughly, gave a clear diagnosis, and sorted the issue without any fuss. The whole process was smooth, straightforward, and stress-free from start to finish. If you or a loved one are looking for an eye clinic where youโ€™ll be treated with the utmost care and expertise, look no further than the Harley Street Eye Centre. Absolutely first class. Weโ€™ll be coming back without hesitation.

I had a great experience with this clinic from start to finish. The whole team were friendly, helpful, supportive, and incredibly professional throughout the process. They gave me all the information I needed and seemed to be very thorough during the assessment, which made me feel confident and well informed before going ahead with treatment. During the laser eye surgery itself, I felt completely reassured and in highly professional hands. The staff were calm, supportive, and talked me through everything, which really helped put me at ease. Iโ€™m over 40 and had an over/under correction approach to hopefully reduce the need for reading glasses in the future, and the team explained everything clearly so I felt comfortable with the decision. Just a few days after my LASIK treatment, I already have better than 20/20 vision and itโ€™s crazy to see everything in what feels like HD. I also have thin corneas, so I wasnโ€™t sure if Iโ€™d even be suitable for surgery, which makes the outcome even more amazing for me. Iโ€™m pleased I decided to go ahead with the procedure and would highly recommend this clinic to anyone considering laser eye surgery.

I underwent LASIK surgery at Harley Street Eye Centre in March and would like to share my very positive experience. The entire process was handled with a high level of professionalism and care. Dr Ghabara, who performed my surgery, demonstrated exceptional expertise, and the procedure itself was smooth and remarkably efficient. The overall experience was excellent. I would also like to acknowledge Dr Hakam, who served as client coordinator and ensured that every stage of the process was clearly explained and well organised. In addition, April and Amanda at reception provided consistently courteous and attentive service, contributing to a welcoming and well-managed environment. I am particularly pleased to report that my recovery has been entirely uneventful, with no issues following the LASIK procedure, and I am extremely satisfied with the outcome. I would confidently recommend Harley Street Eye Clinic to anyone considering laser eye surgery.

The gold-standard treatment for halting the progression of keratoconus and corneal ectasia.

If you’ve been diagnosed with keratoconus or another corneal ectatic condition, corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) is designed to help slow or halt the progression of the disease and preserve your vision. Typically it is the first line of surgical treatment for Keratoconus.

Keratoconus causes the cornea to become thinner and gradually change shape, leading to blurred or distorted vision over time. By strengthening the collagen fibres within the cornea, CXL improves corneal stability and helps reduce further thinning or bulging.

As keratoconus is a progressive condition, early intervention can help preserve corneal stability and reduce the risk of further deterioration. At The Harley Street Eye Centre, we use advanced diagnostic technology to assess your corneal health and determine whether corneal collagen cross-linking is the most appropriate treatment for your individual needs.

What is Corneal Cross-Linking?

Corneal cross-linking (CXL) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure designed to strengthen the cornea and help prevent further thinning or distortion caused by keratoconus and other corneal ectatic conditions. It works by applying riboflavin (vitamin B2) eye drops to the eye and activating them with ultraviolet A (UVA) light.

How Does Corneal Cross-Linking Work?

Unlike laser eye surgery, which reshapes the cornea to correct refractive errors, corneal cross-linking strengthens and stabilises the cornea. The treatment creates additional bonds between the collagen fibres within the cornea, helping it resist the progressive thinning and bulging associated with keratoconus.

Why is Corneal Cross-Linking Performed?

By slowing or halting disease progression, corneal cross-linking can help preserve your existing vision and reduce the likelihood of requiring more invasive treatments, such as a corneal transplant. At The Harley Street Eye Centre, we’ll assess whether your keratoconus is progressing and determine whether corneal cross-linking is the most appropriate treatment for your individual needs.

How Does Corneal Cross-Linking Surgery Work?

Preparing the Eye

Anaesthetic eye drops are applied before treatment to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Depending on your specialist's recommended technique, the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium) may be removed or left intact.

Riboflavin Application

Riboflavin (vitamin B2) eye drops are applied to the cornea over a period of time, allowing the solution to be absorbed into the corneal tissue.

Ultraviolet Light Treatment

Once the riboflavin has been absorbed, the cornea is exposed to a carefully controlled dose of ultraviolet A (UVA) light. The combination of riboflavin and UVA light strengthens the collagen fibres in the cornea, improving its stability.

Personalised Treatment Approach

Corneal cross-linking may be performed using either an epithelium-off (epi-off) or epithelium-on (epi-on) technique. Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate approach based on your individual circumstances.

Why Early Treatment Matters

Corneal cross-linking is generally most effective when performed before significant thinning or scarring develops. Identifying progressive keratoconus early can help preserve vision, maintain corneal stability and reduce the likelihood of requiring more invasive treatment, such as a corneal transplant.

What Are the Benefits of Corneal Cross-Linking?

Corneal cross-linking offers several potential benefits for suitable patients with progressive keratoconus and other corneal ectatic conditions. By strengthening the cornea, the procedure aims to slow or halt disease progression, reducing the need for more invasive treatment in the future.

Helps Slow or Halt Keratoconus Progression

Corneal cross-linking strengthens the collagen fibres within the cornea, helping to slow or halt the progression of keratoconus and other corneal ectatic conditions before significant thinning or scarring occurs.

Can be combined with a keratoconus specific laser vision correction procedure for a combined vision improvement + Stop progression procedure.

Preserves Corneal Strength and Shape

By creating additional cross-links between collagen fibres, the procedure helps the cornea maintain its structural strength and natural shape, reducing further thinning, bulging and distortion over time.

May Improve Contact Lens Tolerance

For some patients, a more stable corneal shape may make contact lenses easier to fit and more comfortable to wear following treatment.

Minimally Invasive Outpatient Procedure

Corneal cross-linking is performed as a day procedure and does not involve replacing or reshaping the cornea. This procedure may also reduce the likelihood of requiring more invasive treatment, such as a corneal transplant, in the future.

Am I a Good Candidate for Corneal Cross-Linking Surgery?

Corneal cross-linking may be recommended for people with progressive keratoconus or other corneal ectatic conditions. Whether the procedure is suitable for you depends on a comprehensive assessment of your eyes, including your corneal thickness, the progression of your condition and your overall eye health.

You may be a suitable candidate if you:

During your consultation, your consultant will perform a detailed examination using advanced diagnostic imaging to assess your corneal health and determine whether corneal cross-linking is the most appropriate treatment for your individual needs.

What is corneal cross-linking surgery?

Corneal cross-linking (CXL) is a minimally invasive procedure designed to strengthen the cornea and help slow or halt the progression of keratoconus and other corneal ectatic conditions. It uses riboflavin (vitamin B2) eye drops and controlled ultraviolet (UV) light to create additional cross-links between collagen fibres, improving the cornea’s strength and stability.

Corneal cross-linking typically takes 60 to 90 minutes per eye, although the exact treatment time depends on the technique used. Much of the procedure involves allowing the riboflavin eye drops to absorb into the cornea before the UV light treatment begins. As it is performed as a day procedure, you’ll usually be able to return home the same day.

Corneal cross-linking is performed using local anaesthetic eye drops, so most patients experience little or no discomfort during the procedure. As the eye heals, it’s common to experience temporary discomfort, watering, light sensitivity and a gritty sensation for several days. Your specialist will provide detailed aftercare instructions, and a protective contact lens is usually placed to support healing.

The primary aim of corneal cross-linking is to stabilise the cornea and help prevent further vision loss rather than improve vision itself. Some patients notice modest improvements in vision as the cornea stabilises, but the procedure is mainly intended to preserve existing vision.

Most patients can resume many of their normal daily activities within several days to a week, depending on the treatment technique used and how their eye heals. It’s common for vision to fluctuate during the early stages of recovery, and it may take several weeks or even months for vision to fully stabilise.

Corneal cross-linking is intended to provide long-term stabilisation of the cornea. In many patients, a single treatment is sufficient to slow or halt the progression of keratoconus. However, ongoing monitoring is important, as a small number of patients may require additional treatment if progression continues.

Whether both eyes can be treated during the same visit depends on your individual circumstances and your specialistโ€™s recommendation. Many patients have each eye treated separately, allowing the first eye to heal before proceeding with the second, although this will be discussed during your consultation.
